13. M5B/Boiler Room + Chimney

The boiler room is a one-story brick building established in 1931. The brick furnace connected to the chimney and boiler accessories are still on display for the public.

The boiler room was significant in providing steam to every factory and sent exhaust to the chimney. It is now the perfect venue to host all kinds of activities and exhibitions. The National Palace Museum, for example once transformed the room into a digital show to demonstrate national treasures. The corridor outside can turn back time, featuring the 100-year history and stories of Huashan.

Built along with the boiler room in 1931 during the Japanese rule, the chimney is one of the three designated historic sites at Huashan.

The chimney was constructed by experts from Japan with the height of 50 meters, diameter of 2.5 meters on the bottom and 1.2 meters on the top. It was the second highest building at that time only second to the General Governor Office. In 1970, it was cut short three meters because the boiler fuel was changed from coal to heavy oil. With the height of 47 meters, it is still the landmark in the park. The chimney is not only the favorite of visitors, but even magpies like to build nests around it.
